Matthew Chambers’ Abstract Ceramc Works

His love of Constructivism, architecture and design is channeled into a geometric vortex of ceramic. Each piece by Matthew Chambers is an adventure in abstraction of form through craftsmanship.

Complexity is no obstacle for this British ceramist. His ability at the potter’s wheel allows him to construct abstract pieces of minimalist mood by layering extremely thin sections of clay to form each single object.

Creating sculptures that evoke natural, earthy tones but that are also reminiscent of sophisticated technological lenses. To create them Chambers added oxides to the clay before starting the making process. Each object is then sanded and polished before and after being fired, so that the surface becomes opaque, stone-like, soft to the touch and speckled in mirco-crystals.

After having graduated in 2004 at the Royal College of London, Chambers became fascinated with Constructivism and artists like Barbara Hepworth, Bridget Riley and Mondrian.

There is no initial design or drawing, experimenting with shape and form is part of the process. Each sculpture is constructed one part at a time, until each component is layered into a single piece. “The fun”, he states, “is discovering how a shape leads to another shape and how they adapt to each other”.
